Gardening: Companion Planting with Tomatoes

Companion Planting with Tomatoes...

NON-GMO, HEIRLOOM, ORGANIC SEEDS

What is companion planting? Well each of these plants work together to help bring out the best in each other, so this means you can plant all these together in one area.
----------------------------

Lets start with the lovely, most popular and easiest to grow tomato...
So let's start with the first pack of seeds you will be receiving. This tomato is probably the most prized possession tomato for canners when they are creating their own special pasta sauce from their garden harvest!

Excellent yields of bright red, medium-small, large shaped fruits.

- Popular for cooking, canning, and paste.
- Very popular variety.
- Produces vigorous vines.
- Determinate.

To go with the Roma Tomatoes we have...

Danver Carrots!
Carrots go wonderful with tomatoes because they kind of work together benefiting one another. Tomatoes provide shade for the heat-sensitive carrots and tomatoes also secrete a natural insect deterrent called solanine which kills insects that could otherwise harm carrots. Tomatoes can enhance the flavor of carrots, too. On the other hand, they break up the soil so that more air and water can go to the tomato plants’ roots.

- Long and 2" thick with thickly tapered ends.
- Tender and very sweet
- Carrots are a sun-loving plants that also like the cold.
- Keep them consistently watered and they'll be happy.

Then there are the peppers...

Peppers are great for this companion combination because they prevent root rot in pretty much any plant that they are compatible with and help with other Fusarium diseases and repels that pesky white fly.
If you are growing for the "heat" factor of the pepper though plant in containers next to your tomatoes because the tomatoes could "cool" your peppers a bit and they could heat up your tomatoes but you still want the benefits that they provide in this companion combination.

These peppers have a strong pungent flavored pepper maturing from green to yellow.

Next on the list we have...
Also, known as Garlic Chives. A perennial plant that grows narrow, grass-like leaves that have a mild onion-like flavor. Chives are rich in vitamins A and C, contain trace amounts of sulfur, and are rich in calcium and iron.
Chives are included in this variety because the smell of them mask the smell of the carrots therefore keeps those pesky carrot flies uninterested and out of your carrots! However, with that being said they also improve the overall flavor of both tomatoes and carrots!

- Used for many culinary creations.
- Perfect for containers and small spaces.
- The plant will grow to about 12" tall.
In any companion planting there are usually edible flowers or herbs. For this variety we have added...
Borage is wonderful and has a great reputation for it's beneficial effect on the mind. It's been used to dispel melancholy and induce euphoria. It's a soothing saline, diuretic herb that helps treat damaged or irritated tissues. The leaves can be used as well as an emollient and expectorant. It is also deer proof and a great pollinator

Borage is great for this companion plant variety because it improves the flavors of your tomatoes and also protects your tomatoes from tomato hornworms.

AND...
Marigolds
Marigolds attract butterflies, bees and other beneficial pollinators. Did you know that these are even great to feed to your chickens along with a good plant to learn how to "seed save."(Learn More About Seed Saving Here) They are easy to grow and will grow all summer into early fall. They are also drought tolerant and don't need much tending to.

Marigolds are our last inclusion in this "companion" pack of seeds because they help with pretty much everything in your garden as far as insects go. They bring in the good bugs and kick out the bad bugs. I typically will plant these around my whole garden.

  15. Well, this year for the first time, I have a LOT of room for a vegetable garden. Until now, I've grown food in containers. In 2015, I'll get to expand. I'll also have a greenhouse so that I can start seeds early. So growing food, in 2015, is what I'm most excited about. Thank you, as always, for your generous giveaways. Happy Holidays and all the best in the new year!
